April Fools Day Facts!
April Fools’ Day falls on the 1st of April every year. Here are a couple of fun facts you may not know about April Fool’s Day.
- During the 19th century, April Fools’ Day gained popularity as a tradition in the United States. Mark Twain, the American novelist, is famously quoted as having said, “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.”
- According to a YouGov America poll conducted in 2021, 47% of American adults find April Fools’ Day to be “annoying”, while 45% find the day to be “amusing”. Where do you stand?
- As a prank in 1996, Taco Bell announced that they had bought the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and rebranded it as the “Taco Liberty Bell” to aid with the national debt!
- In 2008, the BBC announced that while filming its natural history series, “Miracles of Evolution,” camera crews near the Antarctic had captured footage of Adélie penguins taking flight. To support this claim, the BBC even released a video clip of these flying penguins, which went viral on the internet. Terry Jones, the presenter, explained that instead of huddling together to endure the harsh Antarctic winter, these penguins flew thousands of miles to the rainforests of South America, where they spent the winter sunbathing. In a subsequent video, the BBC revealed how they created the special effects for the flying penguins! This wasn’t the first or last April Fools prank from the BBC, so we’re excited to see what they’ll have us believe this year!
