Tricks? Or Treats?

The true history of Halloween is somewhat debatable. Its name is derived from a contraction of the phrase “All Hallows’ Eve.” This phrase was first seen in Old English within the 16th century and has Christian origins due to the feast of All Hallows, also known as All Saints

Halloween is also typically linked with Celtic origins due to their festival of “Samhain” (summer’s end). This was a time to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, the darker half of the year.

This occasion of marking the end of summer was also a time when people believed that the souls of the dead would return to visit their homes.

Families welcomed these spirits and even held feasts in which they would set a place at the table for their loved ones who had departed. Unfortunately, people also believed that harmful spirits were also equally as active.

In order to deter and discourage a visit from the dangerous souls of the “Otherworld,” boys would go door to door seeking additional fuel for the Samhain bonfire. Villagers were happy to oblige.

This is one possible origination for today’s traditional trick-or- treating. Halloween as we know it today was eventually celebrated coast-to-coast in America by the early 20th century. Whether you prefer the Halloween tricks or passing out the treats, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable Halloween!
