Solana Beach is more than beautiful beaches. Yes, it’s a stunning coastline. But here’s what I love most. You can shift from seaside to canyon to lagoon. In minutes. This pocket of North County is packed with natural beauty. The following are four of my favorite ways to experience Solana Beach. Slowly. Intentionally. Outside. Places that give you space. To breathe. Reconnect. And reset. 

1) Annie’s Canyon Trail

Want something fun and energizing? Annie’s Canyon Trail is perfect. The entrance is a few minutes from the beach. Right near the lagoon. It’s an easy hike. Short. Playful. Home to the slot canyon. Where you wind through sandstone walls. That feel bigger than you’d expect. The climb is mild. But it’s revitalizing. You get your legs moving. Your breath quickens. Nature pulls you out of your head. And into your body. Connected with nature. 

It’s a great solo trail. Or perfect with your partner. You can take your kids. It’s dog-friendly. Just please pick up after your pet! Bring water. Don’t rush. This is a trail to savor. Views from the top are breathtaking. The lagoon. The ocean. The quiet. Dr. Suzanna always says hiking is the perfect nervous system reset. I recommend it to patients all the time. Moving your body in nature helps you regulate. You shift out of survival mode. Life’s fast pace. This softens you. Grounds you. Energizes you. You feel alive again. Annie’s Canyon is where to find that feeling.

2) San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve & Nature Center

One of the best things to do in Solana Beach outdoors is to visit the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. It feels like a sanctuary. Long, gentle trails. Surrounded by water. Birds. It’s one of the biggest wetlands in San Diego County. Spanning close to 980 acres. I love this space. It’s part of my regular wellness routine. It’s so healing. Quiet. Helps calm the nervous system. You can walk slowly. Breathe. Watch birds. Listen. To their songs. To the calm. To the reeds moving in the breeze. It’s the perfect reset.

Mornings are beautiful. Even cloudy ones. People take photos. Stretch on the overlook decks. Ride their bikes. Walk their dogs. Sometimes, groups do yoga on the side of the trail. I’ve seen people meditating. There’s even a pedestrian bridge suspended underneath Interstate 5. That hangs right over the lagoon! It’s a really cool, totally different perspective. Everything feels more potent here. Even a short walk can completely shift your mood.

3) Torrey Pines State Reserve

Technically, it’s Del Mar. But close enough. It’s like Solana Beach’s backyard. And 100% worth the visit. Torrey Pines State Reserve is iconic. Sweeping ocean views. Dramatic cliffs. Twisted pines. Sweeping ocean views. It feels like you stepped into a postcard. There are several trails. Shorter loops. Longer hikes. Beginner-friendly options. More challenging trails for experts. You can customize your hike depending on your mood. Some days I do the whole thing. Others, just a quick walk to the High Point by the Visitor’s Center. It’s one of the highest ocean viewpoints in San Diego County. And you feel it. The horizon pulls your energy outward. Your whole body expands.

Go early if you can. Parking fills fast. The light is magical in the mornings anyway. Torrey Pines taps into something ancient. In the body. Mind. Your energy. The trail system’s been around since 1921. But this space formed millions of years ago. Home to the endangered Torrey Pine. Some trees are 150 years old. There’s a sense of awe. Natural wonder. It makes you feel different. Clearer. Lighter. More grounded.

4) Fletcher Cove Beach Park

Solana Beach wouldn’t be Solana Beach without going to the beach. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Solana Beach. And Fletcher Cove Beach Park is the place to be. You’ll find the locals here. Because it’s relaxing. Has a laid-back vibe. It’s super easy to access. And there’s a little bit of everything. 

Plenty of sand for sunbathing. A park for kids. A basketball court with ocean views. Picnic tables. Showers. Public restrooms. And a wide, sandy stretch. So it never feels too chaotic. Unless it’s a holiday weekend. The cliffs are beautiful. Soft colors. Clean lines. The water is usually clear. Calm. Great for swimming. A popular surf spot. Great waves for beginners. 

I love Fletcher Cove for its simplicity. No pressure. No big mission. Just time at the beach. By the water. The ocean just doing its thing. When you’re done, grab a meal nearby. Maybe at a local taco shop. Or walk up to the Cedros district for a coffee. The Brigantine is also a classic.

Solana Beach invites you to live slower. To move your body. Experience nature. Be outdoors. To breathe more deeply. To reconnect and feel alive. Start your morning with a trail. Take an afternoon walk around the lagoon. Stop to stretch your legs when traveling on I-5. Grab lunch. Sit in the sun at Fletcher Cove. This beach city is built for wellness. Nature supports it. I love it when patients go for a hike at Torrey Pines after a network spinal entrainment. It’s perfect for integrating gentle chiropractic with nature. This little coastal oasis has a lot to offer. And the best things to do in Solana Beach involve being outside.
