There’s an assumption about self-care. That it’s bubble baths. Weekly massages. Facials. Long vacations. But here’s the thing many people miss. Real self-care is simpler than all this. It’s how you speak to yourself. The way you treat your body when it’s tired. The food you eat. Supporting your nervous system.

Here’s something I tell patients as a gentle touch chiropractor. Self-care is how you live your life. Not something you add to it. You don’t need more time. Or to spend the weekend at the spa. Self-care is about small choices. That support your body. Mind. Spirit. Keep reading. These five simple self-care tips can quietly change how you feel. Physically. Emotionally. Mentally. Energetically.

1) Slow Down

Modern life is fast. We live in a society that rewards doing more. Always being on. Always engaged. Accomplishing more. Moving faster. More. More. More. All the time. Want to know the real reward? Slowing down. Way down. Your nervous system needs it. You need it. Yes, movement is important. We’ll get to that. So is productivity. But slowing down doesn’t mean stopping. It means giving your body time to reset. Repair. Rest. Exhale.

It’s not doing nothing. More like choosing to be gentler on purpose. Sounds great in theory. But it’s often easier said than done. We get stuck in our ways. Slowing down can feel foreign. Especially when you’re always busy. But you don’t have to stop. It’s about simple changes. Doing small things. That give your body and mind a break. The one you so desperately deserve. Try this:

  • Watch a show without multitasking
  • Sit outside for 5 minutes in the morning or evening
  • Turn off unnecessary notifications
  • Keep your ringer on silent if you can
  • Limit your time on social media
  • Sit in the garden
  • Take a gentle walk on the beach
  • Write in your journal for 10 minutes a day
  • Color in an adult coloring book
  • Catch the sunset
  • Read a book
  • Engage in creative activities

All help instill a sense of calm. It might not seem like much. But there’s power in small things. Seriously. Slowing down isn’t lazy. It’s necessary.

2) Give Your Body Some Extra Care

Daily hygiene is essential. But what about turning these routines into rituals? It honestly changes everything. Try slowing down in the shower. Feel the warm water on your skin. Smell your favorite soap. Moisturize your skin. Intentionally. Don’t rush to wash your face. Apply face cream and serum with care. Put a sticky note on the bathroom mirror that says “I am beautiful.”

Your body is always listening. These intentional moments are a like love language to the nervous system. Telling you that you matter. Face masks. Dry brushing. Exfoliating. Brushing your hair slowly. There’s nothing superficial about it. It’s grounding. It instills presence. Confidence. You feel better in your skin. Radiate with a certain glow. Giving your body some extra care doesn’t take more time. It just takes awareness. More presence. There’s tremendous power here.

3) Stay Hydrated

Water is life. Drink more water. It’s one of the easiest self-care tips there is. Hydration improves everything. Body. Mind. Energy levels. Skin health. Even mild dehydration impacts mood. It can cause anxiety. Zaps your energy.  Make you cranky. Feel overwhelmed. Think water is boring? Think again. Infuse your water with lemon. Drink more herbal tea. Consume foods with water. Cucumber. Watermelon. Hydration is nervous system nourishment. It’s simple. Foundational for well-being. Essential to thrive.

4) Eat Healthy Food

Self-care is multifaceted. Your body is a temple. What you eat either supports this temple. Or causes it to crumble. Balanced nutrition is part of self-care. Making conscious food choices. Eating mindfully. Think color. Variety. Plenty of fresh fruit. Veggies. Lean protein. Healthy fats. Eating healthy isn’t about perfection. It’s about small upgrades. Making different choices. Mixed nuts instead of a processed snack. A piece of dark chocolate instead of a bowl of ice cream. Water or tea instead of soda. I often remind patients that it’s support. For your body. Mind. Even your spiritual journey

5) Make Time for Daily Movement

The body is designed to move. It craves movement. Especially if you sit all day. Here’s the thing I tell patients as a network spinal practitioner. Because I see many people for holistic chiropractic care who don’t move much. Movement doesn’t need to be intense. Gentle movement is effective. And integral to self-care. A daily walk. Gentle stretches. A 15-minute morning yoga practice. The smallest steps can lead to great change. Movement stimulates circulation. It helps with nervous system function

Ideally, 30 minutes a day is good. Even 10 minutes holds weight. A short walk around the block. Or on the beach. At a trail near your house. Through the park. Choose something you enjoy. You won’t do it otherwise. There’s no point in picking up a racket if you don’t like tennis. When movement feels good, it becomes a habit. Your body responds. Your brain lights up.
